In 2025, the landscape of Core Surgical Training CT1 posts reflected a competitive ratio of 8.57, epitomising the fierce competition for coveted positions. With 5,399 applications vying for 630 posts, the intensity of the selection process was palpable. This marked a notable increase from a competition ratio of 5.25 in 2024.

Once shortlisted for an interview, expect an invitation to select CST preferences around March 2026. Prioritise available CST posts, numbering them in order of preference.
Allocation follows a straightforward algorithm: starting with your top choice, if available, it's offered; if not, it moves to the next. Rank all desired placements, excluding those you don't wish to consider.
Consider geographic regions wisely; you can apply to 15 deaneries in the UK (excluding Northern Ireland). Be mindful of competition ratios when ranking posts.
Factor in future speciality aspirations when selecting rotations. Determine whether hospitals are district general or teaching hospitals, as each offers distinct advantages in professional development and exposure to medical conditions. Conduct research to ensure informed decisions.
